Phonics: Reading by understanding letter sounds and how they form words. 

Reading Comprehension: Understanding and interpreting texts.

Basic Numeracy: Understanding number bonds, place value, addition and subtraction.

For example, knowing 'number bonds' like 2+8=10 and 3+7=10 allows for quick mental calculations, such as solving '22 + ? = 30' by knowing that 22 needs 8 to reach 30. because 2 needs 8 to reach 10.
